Itinerary, day by day
Your guide and driver meet you in the arrivals hall at Noi Bai International Airport and drive you about 35 kilometres into Hanoi. Golf bags travel with you in the same vehicle, so there is nothing to send ahead. Check in at your hotel; rooms are available from 14:00.
The rest of the day is yours. If the flight leaves you with energy, Hoan Kiem Lake and the streets of the Old Quarter are best seen on foot in the early evening, when the traffic thins and the pavement kitchens set out their stools. Tomorrow starts early, so your guide confirms the pick-up time and the breakfast arrangement before saying goodnight. Overnight in Hanoi.
An early start for Heron Lake Golf Course & Resort at Vinh Yen, about 50 kilometres north-west of Hanoi and a little over an hour by road. We request a 07:00 tee time, which gets you round before the heat of the day and leaves the afternoon for the drive north. Breakfast is normally a breakfast box from the hotel, because you leave before the restaurant opens.
Heron Lake — Dam Vac in Vietnamese, after the natural lake it is built around — was laid out by Pacific Coast Design of Australia and opened in 2004: 18 holes, par 72, 7,039 yards from the back tees. Water is the main defence and comes into play on most of the round, and the herons the course is named for still work the margins. The fairways and rough are paspalum, which sits the ball up and makes the course more forgiving than the card suggests, so it suits a group of mixed handicaps. Green fee, caddy and a shared buggy are included.
After the round there is time to shower and eat at the clubhouse at your own expense, then you join the Noi Bai – Lao Cai expressway, which runs beside the club. It is roughly 270 kilometres to Sapa: the road follows the Red River valley to Lao Cai and climbs for the last hour into the Hoang Lien Son range. You reach Sapa, at around 1,600 metres, in the early evening. Overnight in Sapa.
The long day: an early start, 18 holes and about four and a half hours in the vehicle afterwards — about 320 km in all. If you would rather not combine them, we can move the round to a later tee time and arrive in Sapa at night, or add a night. Ask us to requote.
After breakfast you drive down from Sapa to Sapa Grand Golf Course at Bat Xat, about 42 kilometres and an hour and a quarter from town, for a tee time between 08:00 and 08:30. Despite the name, the course is not in Sapa itself: it lies in the hills above the Red River, which here is the border between Vietnam and China, and you play with the river and the far bank in view on a number of holes.
Sapa Grand opened in 2023 on more than 100 hectares of steep ground, so the 18 holes run along ridges and down into valleys, with marked changes of elevation from tee to green and a chain of lakes and streams through the lower part of the property. Club selection matters more here than length. Cloud often drifts through in the morning and clears as you play. The clubhouse has changing rooms, a pro shop and a restaurant with a terrace over the course. Green fee, caddy and a shared buggy are included.
You are back in Sapa in the afternoon with the rest of the day free. The stone church on the square, the market at the top of town and the cafés looking down the Muong Hoa valley are all a short walk from the hotels we use. Overnight in Sapa.
Breakfast and check-out, then at 08:30 a short transfer to the Fansipan cable car station. Fansipan, at 3,143 metres, is the highest peak in Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia. The cable car, opened in 2016, holds two Guinness World Records: the longest non-stop three-rope cable car in the world at 6,292.5 metres, and the greatest height gain of its type at 1,410 metres. The ride takes about fifteen minutes across the Muong Hoa valley, with terraced fields far below the cabin.
From the upper station it is roughly 600 stone steps to the summit marker, past the pagodas and the bronze Buddha on the upper slopes. Take the climb slowly: the air is noticeably thinner up here. A funicular covers most of the steps if you prefer, paid on the spot. Buffet lunch at the mountain restaurant is included.
After lunch you drive back down the expressway to Hanoi, about five and a half hours, arriving in the early evening. Overnight in Hanoi.
Weather: Fansipan makes its own weather and the summit can be in cloud on a day that is clear in Sapa. The cable car runs in cloud and the visit is worthwhile either way, but the long view is not guaranteed. Bring a warm layer in any season — the summit is typically 8 to 10 °C colder than the town.
Breakfast at the hotel and free time until check-out at 12:00. At the time agreed with your guide, your driver collects you and your golf bags and drives you about 35 kilometres to Noi Bai International Airport for your flight home. A late check-out or extra nights in Hanoi can be arranged on request.

Yes. The vehicle, driver and English-speaking guide are for your group only, and the vehicle is sized for your golf bags as well as your seats: a 7-seater up to 3 golfers, a 16-seater for 4 to 7, a 29-seat coach for 8 to 24 and a 45-seat coach above that. When the group travels by coach, a smaller local shuttle takes you to the Fansipan cable car station in Sapa; that cost is already in the price.
The prices are for weekday rounds. Start the tour on a Sunday, Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday and both rounds fall on weekdays. Clubs add surcharges at weekends and on public holidays, so we requote if a round falls on those days. Tee times are requested when you confirm and may shift by an hour either way.

Yes. A companion who does not play travels in the same vehicle, stays in the same hotels and pays a lower fare without green fees, quoted on request; on Day 3 they can visit Cat Cat village or walk in the Muong Hoa valley with a local guide. Children under 3 travel free. Children aged 3 to 10 pay 68% of the adult fare without an extra bed or 86% with one. The adult fare includes two rounds, so for a child who does not play, or a junior who does, ask us for a separate quote: junior green fees and minimum-age rules differ between the clubs.
Citizens of the UK, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the Nordic countries, Japan, South Korea and a number of other European countries can enter Vietnam visa-free for up to 45 days. Most ASEAN citizens get 14 to 30 days. Everyone else, including US, Canadian, Australian and Indian passport holders, applies online for an e-visa (up to 90 days, single or multiple entry) at the official portal evisa.gov.vn, usually issued in about 3 working days. To confirm your tour, pay a 30% deposit by bank transfer or by Visa, Mastercard or Amex through a secure OnePay payment link that we email to you. The remaining 70% is due at least 14 days before you arrive. The deposit is non-refundable. If you cancel (in writing) more than 21 days before departure, you lose only the deposit, and any amount paid above it stays valid for 12 months towards another tour. From 7 to 21 days before departure the charge is 50% of the tour price, and within 6 days or for a no-show it is 100%. Groups of more than 8 people, and tours that include flights or Mekong river cruises, have different terms.
