Is this a private tour?

The vehicle is sized to your group: a 7-seater up to 3 passengers, a 16-seater up to 7, a 29-seater up to 24 and a 45-seat coach above that. Are any flights included?

No flights are needed inside this tour – Sapa, Ha Long and Ninh Binh are all reached by road on the expressways from Hanoi. International flights to and from Hanoi are not included; we can book them for you at the current fare if you prefer. On Day 1, tell us your arrival time: if you land in the afternoon we move Cat Cat village to the next morning at no extra cost. On Day 7, choose a flight departing after 15:00.

Do I need a visa for Vietnam?

Citizens of the UK, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the Nordic countries, Japan, South Korea and a number of other European countries can enter Vietnam visa-free for up to 45 days. Most ASEAN citizens get 14 to 30 days. Everyone else, including US, Canadian, Australian and Indian passport holders, applies online for an e-visa (up to 90 days, single or multiple entry) at the official portal evisa.gov.vn, usually issued in about 3 working days. How do I book and pay?

Send an inquiry and we confirm the price in writing within 24 hours. Nothing is charged on this website. To confirm your tour, pay a 30% deposit by bank transfer or by Visa, Mastercard or Amex through a secure OnePay payment link that we email to you. The remaining 70% is due at least 14 days before you arrive. The deposit is non-refundable. If you cancel (in writing) more than 21 days before departure, you lose only the deposit, and any amount paid above it stays valid for 12 months towards another tour. From 7 to 21 days before departure the charge is 50% of the tour price, and within 6 days or for a no-show it is 100%. Can I change the itinerary or upgrade the hotels?

Yes. Every day can be changed – tell us what you would like to add or skip and we reprice. Common changes are taking Bai Dinh out of Day 6 for an earlier arrival in Hanoi, swapping the Ha Long boat route to Thien Cung and Dau Go caves instead of Titop Island and Luon Cave (same price), or adding dinners. You can also mix hotel classes, for example 3-star in Sapa and 5-star in Hanoi, and we quote the combination.

Can children join, and what do they pay?

Yes. Children under 3 travel free (parents settle any supplier fee on the spot). Children aged 3 to 10 pay 68% of the adult fare sharing their parents' bed, or 86% with an extra bed; a child sharing a room with one adult, and children aged 11 and over, pay the adult fare. The Fansipan cable car and the Rong May Glass Bridge set their child fares by height rather than age, and where the child ticket is cheaper we pass the saving on. Group size for the price table is the number of adults; children are not counted towards the band.

Why are no dinners included?

The tour carries seven lunches and no dinners, which is deliberate and is reflected in the price. Two of the lunches are tied to the day – the buffet at the Fansipan Legend station on Day 2 and a bowl of pho before the airport on Day 7 – and the rest are set menus at local restaurants we use regularly. Evenings are free because Sapa, the Ha Long seafront and the Hanoi Old Quarter are all better eaten in on your own terms. If you would rather we booked dinners as well, we will quote them. Vegetarian, halal, no-pork, no-beef and allergy requirements are straightforward if you tell us at booking.

What if Fansipan is in cloud, or Ha Long Bay sailings are suspended?

Fansipan makes its own weather and the summit can sit in cloud on a day that is clear in Sapa. The cable car runs in cloud and the visit is worth making either way, but if you have come for the long view, ask your guide the evening before – the operator posts summit conditions each morning and we can do the valley walk first and go up later. On Ha Long Bay, the harbour master can suspend sailings at short notice in bad weather; if that happens we run the Ha Long land programme instead and refund the unused boat cost rather than charging for a day that did not happen.

What is the best time to go?

March to May and late September to November give the best balance: clear days in Sapa, warm water and calm seas at Ha Long, and the rice terraces at their greenest in May or golden in late September. June to August is hot and wet in Hanoi and Ha Long, with afternoon storms, though Sapa stays cooler. December to February is cold in Sapa, often below 10°C with fog on Fansipan, and cool and grey in Hanoi and Ha Long. The Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum interior is closed every Monday and Friday and for about two months each autumn, usually October and November; the rest of the complex stays open.

In Sapa you stay in the town rather than down in the valley, a few minutes from the cable car station, the market and dinner. In Hanoi you are in or beside the Old Quarter, so after a driving day you can walk out rather than get back in the vehicle. In Ha Long the hotels are on the Bai Chay side near the cruise harbour, which buys you half an hour in bed on Day 5.

Hanoi Arrival – Sapa – Cat Cat – Shin Chai (Lunch)

Your guide and driver meet you at Noi Bai International Airport, or at your Hanoi hotel, and you set off north on the Noi Bai – Lao Cai expressway. At 245 kilometres it is the longest in Vietnam, and it turned what used to be an overnight train journey into a morning's drive up the Red River valley. A packed lunch is handed out on board so the group keeps moving. The final stretch climbs into the Hoang Lien Son range and you arrive in Sapa at about 1,600 metres, where it is reliably several degrees cooler than Hanoi.

The afternoon is spent in the valley below the town. Cat Cat is a Black H'mong village reached on stone steps past indigo dyeing frames, water-driven hemp mills and a waterfall at the bottom of the walk. It is a working village that has learned to receive visitors, not a reconstruction. A short distance on, Shin Chai is a quieter H'mong settlement where the stop is for photographs and for the view back across the valley.

Check in at your hotel in Sapa town. The evening is yours: the night market sets up along the square and the streets off it, selling brocade, silver, honey and hill-tribe textiles, and dinner is wherever you fancy it. Overnight in Sapa.

This is the longest single drive of the week – allow five and a half to six hours from Noi Bai, with comfort stops. If your flight lands in the afternoon rather than the morning, tell us at booking: we move Cat Cat to the following morning rather than arrive at the village gate in the dark, and the price does not change.

Silver Waterfall – Mt. Fansipan – Lao Chai & Ta Van (Breakfast, Lunch)

Breakfast at the hotel, then out of town at 08:30 on the road towards the O Quy Ho pass. Twelve kilometres along it the Silver Waterfall drops about two hundred metres down the rock beside the road – a short climb up the steps beside it gets you level with the middle of the fall.

Then to the Sun World cable car station for Fansipan, at 3,143 metres the highest peak in Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia, which is why it is called the Roof of Indochina. The cable car that opened in February 2016 took two Guinness World Records on its first day: the longest non-stop three-rope cable car in the world at 6,292.5 metres, and the greatest elevation difference of any cable car of its type, 1,410 metres. The ride takes about fifteen minutes over the Muong Hoa valley with the terraces falling away beneath the cabin. At the upper station the Do Quyen funicular carries you most of the remaining height, leaving a last flight of steps to the summit marker. Buffet lunch is served at the Fansipan Legend station and is inside your ticket.

Back down in the afternoon for a walk of roughly two hours through the Muong Hoa valley to Lao Chai and Ta Van, villages of the Black H'mong and the Giay. The path runs along the terraces and down to the river, and the villages are still farmed rather than staged. The vehicle meets you at the far end so you do not have to walk back up. Evening free in Sapa.

Moana Sapa – Rong May Glass Bridge – Hanoi – Water Puppets (Breakfast, Lunch)

Check out after breakfast and stop first at Moana Sapa, a terraced viewpoint built for photographs above the Muong Hoa valley – frankly a set piece, and a good one, with the valley doing the work behind it.

Then over the O Quy Ho pass, the highest road pass in northern Vietnam and the boundary between Lao Cai and Lai Chau provinces, to the Rong May Glass Bridge. A glass-walled lift runs up the cliff face to a laminated glass walkway projecting out over the valley. On a clear day you look down on the pass switchbacking below; when the cloud rolls in, which it often does, you get what the name promises, which is a dragon in the clouds.

Lunch back in Sapa, then the drive down the expressway to Hanoi, arriving late afternoon. You have free time to walk Hoan Kiem Lake and the thirty-six streets of the Old Quarter, which still carry the trade names of the guilds that founded them – Silk Street, Tin Street, Sugar Street. In the evening, the water puppet show: an art form that began in the flooded rice paddies of the Red River delta, performed waist-deep behind a bamboo screen to a live ensemble. Overnight in Hanoi.

Temple of Literature – West Lake – Ha Long Bay (Breakfast, Lunch)

After breakfast and check-out, the Temple of Literature. Founded in 1070 and home from 1076 to the Imperial Academy, Vietnam's first national university, it is a sequence of five walled courtyards. In the third stand eighty-two stone stelae carried on the backs of tortoises, each recording the names of the men who passed the royal doctoral examinations between 1442 and 1779; the set is inscribed on UNESCO's Memory of the World register.

North to West Lake, the largest lake in the city at roughly seventeen kilometres of shoreline, and Tran Quoc Pagoda on its islet – the oldest pagoda in Hanoi, founded in the sixth century on the bank of the Red River and moved here in 1615 when the river took the old site. Lunch at a local restaurant.

In the afternoon you drive east to Ha Long on the coastal expressway, about two and a half hours. Check in on the Bai Chay side, close to the harbour, and the evening is free – the night market runs along the seafront within walking distance of the hotels. Overnight in Ha Long City.

Ha Long Bay – Full-Day Private Boat Trip (Breakfast, Lunch)

After breakfast, down to the harbour to board your own boat for six hours on the bay. Ha Long was inscribed by UNESCO in 1994 and holds something in the order of 1,600 islands and islets, most of them uninhabited limestone towers left by millions of years of erosion. You sail out past the rocks that everyone photographs on the way – the Dog, the Incense Burner, the Fighting Cocks – with lunch served on board.

The boat calls first at Sung Sot, the Surprise Cave, the largest in the bay: three chambers reached by a flight of steps from the landing, with the innermost opening into a space the size of a church. Then Titop Island, named after the Soviet cosmonaut Gherman Titov, who swam here with Ho Chi Minh in 1962 – there is a small crescent beach at the bottom and a staircase to a viewpoint at the top that gives you the classic picture of the bay. Last, a sampan ride through the tunnel at Luon Cave into the enclosed lagoon behind it, which is quiet in a way the open bay is not.

The boat is chartered for your group alone, which is why the itinerary can flex on the water. Two honest caveats: the bay is busiest at the cave landings between 11:00 and 14:00 whatever boat you are on, and in bad weather the harbour master can suspend sailings at short notice. If that happens we run the Ha Long land programme instead and refund the unused boat cost rather than charging for a day that did not happen.

Ha Long – Trang An – Bai Dinh – Hanoi (Breakfast, Lunch)

An early start and the longest road day of the tour, south-west across the Red River delta through Hai Phong, Thai Binh and Nam Dinh to Ninh Binh – the same limestone as Ha Long, but rising out of rice fields instead of the sea, which is why it is often called Ha Long on land.

At Trang An you board a small sampan, rowed by a local woman and often with her feet, for a trip of two to three hours on a river that runs straight through the mountains. The route threads a chain of low water caves – Sang, Toi, Ba Giot, Nau Ruou – where you duck as the roof comes down, opening each time into a hidden valley with a temple on the bank. Trang An was inscribed by UNESCO in 2014 as a mixed World Heritage site, both for its geology and for an archaeological record of human occupation going back some thirty thousand years.

Lunch at a local restaurant, then Bai Dinh, the largest pagoda complex in Vietnam at 539 hectares. An electric buggy carries you between the halls, which is not a luxury – the arhat corridor alone runs for about three kilometres and holds five hundred stone statues, no two of them alike. Your ticket includes the buggy and the pagoda entrance. Then the last ninety minutes north to Hanoi for check-in. Evening free; overnight in Hanoi.

Ho Chi Minh Complex – One Pillar Pagoda – Noodle Lunch – Departure (Breakfast, Lunch)

Breakfast and check-out, then across to Ba Dinh Square, where Ho Chi Minh read the Declaration of Independence on 2 September 1945. The complex holds the Mausoleum, the ochre Presidential Palace built for the French Governor-General in 1906, and the stilt house behind it where Ho Chi Minh chose to live and work from 1958 until 1969 rather than occupy the palace. Alongside stands the One Pillar Pagoda, founded in 1049 and built as a lotus flower rising from a single stone pillar in a square pond.

The Mausoleum itself is closed every Monday and Friday, and closes for annual maintenance for roughly two months each autumn, usually through October and November. The square, the Palace gardens, the stilt house and the One Pillar Pagoda stay open and the tour runs as written; only the viewing of the Mausoleum interior is affected. Your guide will tell you before the day, not at the gate.

A last lunch of beef or chicken pho – the noodle soup Hanoi exports to the rest of the world – and then your transfer to Noi Bai for the flight home. Please choose a flight departing after 15:00 so there is time for the morning programme and lunch.

Day 5 is the six-hour route: Surprise Cave, Titop Island and the sampan at Luon Cave. Thien Cung and Dau Go caves sit on the shorter four-hour route in a different part of the bay and are not included. If you would rather have those two caves than Titop and Luon, we will swap the route at no change in price – but not both routes in one day. In bad weather the harbour master can suspend sailings at short notice; if that happens we run the Ha Long land programme instead and refund the unused boat cost.

To confirm your tour, pay a 30% deposit by bank transfer or by Visa, Mastercard or Amex through a secure OnePay payment link that we email to you. The remaining 70% is due at least 14 days before you arrive. The deposit is non-refundable. If you cancel (in writing) more than 21 days before departure, you lose only the deposit, and any amount paid above it stays valid for 12 months towards another tour. From 7 to 21 days before departure the charge is 50% of the tour price, and within 6 days or for a no-show it is 100%. Groups of more than 8 people, and tours that include flights or Mekong river cruises, have different terms. Yes. Every day can be changed – tell us what you would like to add or skip and we reprice. Common changes are taking Bai Dinh out of Day 6 for an earlier arrival in Hanoi, swapping the Ha Long boat route to Thien Cung and Dau Go caves instead of Titop Island and Luon Cave (same price), or adding dinners. You can also mix hotel classes, for example 3-star in Sapa and 5-star in Hanoi, and we quote the combination.
Yes. Children under 3 travel free (parents settle any supplier fee on the spot). Children aged 3 to 10 pay 68% of the adult fare sharing their parents' bed, or 86% with an extra bed; a child sharing a room with one adult, and children aged 11 and over, pay the adult fare. The Fansipan cable car and the Rong May Glass Bridge set their child fares by height rather than age, and where the child ticket is cheaper we pass the saving on. Group size for the price table is the number of adults; children are not counted towards the band.
The tour carries seven lunches and no dinners, which is deliberate and is reflected in the price. Two of the lunches are tied to the day – the buffet at the Fansipan Legend station on Day 2 and a bowl of pho before the airport on Day 7 – and the rest are set menus at local restaurants we use regularly. Evenings are free because Sapa, the Ha Long seafront and the Hanoi Old Quarter are all better eaten in on your own terms. If you would rather we booked dinners as well, we will quote them. Vegetarian, halal, no-pork, no-beef and allergy requirements are straightforward if you tell us at booking.
Fansipan makes its own weather and the summit can sit in cloud on a day that is clear in Sapa. The cable car runs in cloud and the visit is worth making either way, but if you have come for the long view, ask your guide the evening before – the operator posts summit conditions each morning and we can do the valley walk first and go up later. On Ha Long Bay, the harbour master can suspend sailings at short notice in bad weather; if that happens we run the Ha Long land programme instead and refund the unused boat cost rather than charging for a day that did not happen.
March to May and late September to November give the best balance: clear days in Sapa, warm water and calm seas at Ha Long, and the rice terraces at their greenest in May or golden in late September. June to August is hot and wet in Hanoi and Ha Long, with afternoon storms, though Sapa stays cooler. December to February is cold in Sapa, often below 10°C with fog on Fansipan, and cool and grey in Hanoi and Ha Long. The Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum interior is closed every Monday and Friday and for about two months each autumn, usually October and November; the rest of the complex stays open.
