10 Best Islands in Thailand

10 Best Islands in Thailand

Exploring Thailand’s top islands can be the highlight of your journey through the kingdom. With pristine beaches, swaying palm trees, and beachfront stays where waves lull you to sleep, it’s the ultimate escape. Whether you're drawn to the Andaman Sea on the west or the Gulf of Thailand in the east, Thailand’s coasts have something special for every traveler.

While any list of the best islands in Thailand involves personal preference, the selections below feature stunning beaches, plenty of amenities, and classic island charm. Take a look and discover the one that matches your dream getaway.

1. Koh Phi Phi

Traveller looking out over the bays of Koh Phi Phi from the viewpoint

With its towering limestone cliffs, dense jungle, and golden bays, Koh Phi Phi is the epitome of tropical beauty. Phi Phi Don, the inhabited island, has developed quickly, which means plenty of restaurants, shops and nightlife: beach bars and fire shows draw a youthful crowd after dark. Scuba diving is a top draw, as is a boat ride to Maya Bay on nearby Koh Phi Phi Leh, made famous by the film The Beach. Swimming is no longer allowed in Maya Bay, and it closes for about two months each year (usually August and September) so the reef can recover.

2. Koh Chang

Clear turquoise water off Koh Chang, Thailand

Koh Chang, Thailand’s third-largest island after Phuket and Koh Samui, remains one of the lesser-visited gems. Its rugged, mountainous terrain gives it a wild edge, and fewer tourists mean you can find peace on secluded beaches or at hidden waterfalls. Despite its size, the relaxed pace makes it ideal for nature lovers seeking a less-commercialized experience.

3. Phuket

Beach and headland on Phuket, Thailand

Phuket is the island for those wanting it all — scenic beaches, entertainment, luxury, and convenience. It’s home to a major international airport, making it an easy stop from anywhere in Southeast Asia. From the buzz of Patong’s nightlife to quiet coves and upscale resorts, Phuket suits families, couples, and solo travelers alike.

4. Koh Lanta

Sunset over the beach on Koh Lanta, Thailand

Spacious and serene, Koh Lanta is perfect for those craving a low-key escape. Located close to Krabi, it has dodged the overdevelopment found in nearby destinations. With nine distinct beaches and a family-friendly vibe, it’s ideal for a laid-back holiday. The transfer from Krabi Airport takes about two hours by minivan, including a short car-ferry crossing; in high season there are also boats from Krabi, Koh Phi Phi and Phuket.

5. Koh Lipe

White-sand beach and longtail boats on Koh Lipe, Thailand

Located in the far south, Koh Lipe boasts powdery white beaches and turquoise seas. Long home to the Urak Lawoi, a seafaring Chao Leh community who still live on the island, it’s now a vibrant destination with eco-lodges and beach bars. Coral reefs lie just offshore, making snorkeling and diving easily accessible. Fresh seafood is a highlight, grilled to perfection right on the beach.

6. Similan Islands

Granite boulders and clear water in the Similan Islands, Thailand

Open only from about mid-October to mid-May, when the national park closes for the monsoon, the Similan Islands are a diver’s paradise. Protected as part of a marine national park, the waters teem with marine life and colorful coral. Facilities are limited and visitors can no longer stay overnight on the islands, so most people come on a day trip by speedboat from Khao Lak or Phuket, while divers join a liveaboard boat. Daily visitor numbers are capped, so book ahead in peak months.

7. Koh Samui

Koh Samui blends comfort and adventure with ease. It has bustling beaches like Chaweng for nightlife lovers and quiet coves for peace-seekers. The island is easy to explore, offers luxury resorts, and even has modern shopping centers. Whether you're a first-time visitor or returning traveler, Koh Samui has something for everyone.

8. Koh Samet

Beach on Koh Samet, Thailand

Just a few hours from Bangkok, Koh Samet is a popular escape for city dwellers. Although its beaches may not rival those in the south, the island makes up for it with easy access and a festive atmosphere. Come evening, beach bars and music light up the shoreline, drawing a lively mix of locals and tourists.

9. Koh Phangan

Traveller on a quiet beach on Koh Phangan, Thailand

Koh Phangan is famous for its Full Moon Party, but there’s more than nightlife here. Beyond the bustling beaches are peaceful coves, jungle-clad hills, and a vibrant community of expats. Whether you're looking for yoga retreats or late-night parties, the island offers a surprising blend of relaxation and excitement.

10. Koh Tao

Bay and coral shallows on Koh Tao, Thailand

Koh Tao —meaning “Turtle Island”—is a favorite for divers and beach bums alike. Known worldwide for affordable dive courses, the island is surrounded by coral reefs alive with marine creatures. Small and welcoming, Koh Tao offers a tight-knit vibe, making visitors feel like locals in no time.

Conclusion

Whether you're dreaming of white-sand beaches, world-class diving spots, vibrant nightlife, or peaceful retreats surrounded by nature, Thailand's islands offer something for every type of traveler. From the buzzing energy of Koh Phi Phi and Koh Phangan to the tranquil shores of Koh Lipe and Koh Tao, each destination brings its own unique charm and unforgettable experiences. With so many stunning options spread across the Gulf of Thailand and the Andaman Sea, you're sure to find the perfect island escape that matches your travel style. So pack your bags and get ready to explore the tropical paradise of Thailand’s best islands!

When to go: Andaman coast or Gulf of Thailand?

Thailand’s two coasts have opposite monsoon patterns, so you can plan a beach trip at any time of year by picking the right side. Choose the Andaman coast from November to April, and the Gulf of Thailand from January to August.

Andaman coast (west): Phuket, Krabi, Koh Lanta, Koh Lipe

  • Best time to go: November to April — dry season, calm seas, crystal-clear water.

  • Rainy season: May to October, with the heaviest rain in September and October. Rough seas can close some boat routes and marine parks, and the Similan Islands shut for the monsoon.

  • Best for: island-hopping, dramatic limestone cliffs, diving the Similan Islands, and a faster or more exploratory trip.

Gulf of Thailand (east): Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, Koh Tao

  • Best time to go: January to August — good conditions right through the European summer, with Koh Samui staying drier longer.

  • Rainy season: October to December, with the heaviest rainfall around October and November.

  • Best for: a long, slow stay in one place, settling into an island routine, and reliable summer weather when the Andaman side is stormy.

Koh Chang and Koh Samet, in the eastern Gulf near the Cambodian border, follow the Andaman calendar more closely and are at their best from November to April.
