Who is David Ng?
David Ng is a Hanoi-based international tour guide and the founder and CEO of World Mate Travel. He grew up in the rice-farming countryside of Thái Bình province, started guiding in Hanoi's Old Quarter at the end of 2000, and later led groups across six Asian countries. He founded World Mate Travel in 2008 and still runs it today.
"David Ng" is the name he uses with international clients and partners. His Vietnamese name is Tú Nguyễn (Nguyễn Văn Tú). Both names refer to the same person.
How did David Ng become a tour guide?
David Ng started his career at the end of 2000 as an English-speaking guide in Hanoi's Old Quarter, walking travellers through its old trading streets, temples, markets and street-food stalls. After about three years in Hanoi, he began leading long-distance tours across Vietnam and the wider region. In early 2003 he received his international tour guide card, No. 101100236, from the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism.
Tourism changed his life. In his own words:
"Tourism turned me from a shy boy from the rice fields of Thái Bình into a guide who could hold a microphone and talk with foreign guests for hours on a 45-seat bus."
Hanoi's Old Quarter is still where many World Mate Travel trips begin — a walk around Hoan Kiem Lake, bún chả for lunch, egg coffee in the afternoon, and Train Street in the evening.
Where has David Ng guided tours?
After his first years in Hanoi, David Ng moved on to long multi-day tours. He guided groups the length of Vietnam, through the mountains of the northeast and northwest, and across Indochina into Laos and Cambodia. He also led tours in Thailand, China and Myanmar.
| Country | Tours David Ng has guided |
|---|---|
| Vietnam | Hanoi Old Quarter; north-to-south tours of the whole country; northeast and northwest Vietnam mountain circuits |
| Laos | Indochina tours across Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia |
| Cambodia | Indochina tours across Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia |
| Thailand | Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Bangkok, Pattaya |
| China | Shanghai, Hangzhou, Suzhou |
| Myanmar | Yangon, Bagan, Mandalay |
His work went beyond leisure travel. He has organised large incentive groups for companies, and national-level delegations for fisheries negotiations between Asian countries.
What did 25 years of guiding teach David Ng about travel in Vietnam?
Twenty-five years on the road teaches things no brochure says. These lessons shape how World Mate Travel plans every itinerary today:
| What a guide learns on the road | How it changes the itinerary |
|---|---|
| Driving times in Vietnam are longer than the distance suggests | Long transfers are planned in hours, not kilometres, with proper lunch and rest stops |
| Popular sights are calm early in the morning and crowded by mid-morning | Key visits are scheduled for early departures |
| Weather differs by region in the same month | A north–south route is ordered so each region is visited in its better season |
| Central Vietnam has its rainy and storm season in the autumn months | Hue, Hoi An and Da Nang days keep flexibility from roughly September to December |
| Mountain roads in the far north are slow and change after heavy rain | Ha Giang and Cao Bang days are not overloaded, and drivers are chosen for mountain experience |
| Tet (Lunar New Year) closes many shops, restaurants and some services | Tet-period trips are planned around what is really open |
| Travellers remember people more than buildings | Itineraries include local families, markets and meals, not only monuments |
Why did David Ng found World Mate Travel?
David Ng founded World Mate Travel in 2008 because the clients he guided asked him to. Travellers from Maybank and Sunway Group in Malaysia, Mr. Hubert of HK Travel in Sweden, and American friends from Ohio encouraged him to open his own company. They promised to send him tours and to recommend him to friends travelling to Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia.
In David's words:
"Because of the trust of those good friends, I decided to open World Mate Travel & Trading Company Limited."
What does the name World Mate Travel mean?
The name World Mate Travel means that every guide and staff member of the company should become a close friend — a "mate" — travelling alongside international guests on every tour in Indochina. The company is built on the idea that a guide is a travel companion, not only a service provider.
Why is he called David Ng?
David Ng chose his business name as a thank-you to the people who shaped his career. "David" stands for his clients and friends from Europe and America. "Ng" stands for his Malaysian Chinese friends. The name honours all the clients and friends — from Europe, America, Malaysia, Singapore and around the world — who travelled with him as a guide and later as a tour operator.
"I am truly grateful to all of you."
How did World Mate Travel grow from Vietnam into Laos and Cambodia?
World Mate Travel started in Hanoi in 2008. In 2010 it received international tour operator licence No. 01-282/2010/TCDL-GP LHQT from the Vietnam National Authority of Tourism, which allows it to organise tours for international visitors. Because David had already guided across Indochina, World Mate Travel began operating tours in Laos and Cambodia in 2015. Since then it has run Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia tours, including trips that combine all three countries.
What does a tour operator do that a tour guide does not?
A guide runs the day. A tour operator builds and runs the whole trip. Since founding World Mate Travel, David's work has moved from the first to the second:
| Part of the trip | What World Mate Travel arranges |
|---|---|
| Itinerary design | Route order, daily pace, season and driving times |
| Hotels | Selection, contracting and booking, from standard to luxury |
| Transport | Private cars, vans and coaches with drivers, domestic flights, trains |
| Guides | Local guides in each region, matched to the group's language |
| Cruises | Overnight cruises in Ha Long Bay, Lan Ha Bay and Bai Tu Long Bay |
| Meals | Restaurant bookings, including halal and no-pork options for Muslim groups |
| Incentive and corporate groups | Programmes for company incentive trips and official delegations |
| Cross-border travel | Connections between Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia |
| Support during the tour | A Hanoi office and a WhatsApp line the traveller can reach |

Can one operator run a Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia trip as one journey?
Yes. World Mate Travel plans and operates Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia as one trip: one itinerary, one contract and one contact from arrival to departure. Each country has its own visa rules, so travellers must check entry requirements for all three before booking flights.
As of September 2026, Vietnam's e-visa is open to all nationalities, valid for up to 90 days, single or multiple entry, issued through the official portal evisa.gov.vn (Vietnam Immigration Department).
