Itinerary, day by day
Your guide and driver meet you in the arrivals hall at Noi Bai International Airport with a World Mate Travel sign, load the golf bags and transfer you the 35 kilometres into Hanoi. Check in at your hotel; standard check-in time is 14:00, and an earlier room can be requested for a morning arrival.
The rest of the day is free. If you have the energy, Hoan Kiem Lake and the trading streets of the Old Quarter are a short walk or taxi ride away, and it is the easiest evening of the week to find your feet. Your guide confirms tomorrow's tee time and pick-up before leaving you. Overnight in Hanoi.
Breakfast at the hotel, then about an hour and a half north-west into Vinh Phuc province, where the course sits on the plain directly beneath the Tam Dao mountain range. It is an IMG design of 18 holes, par 72, stretching beyond 7,200 yards from the back tees, with four sets of tees so the same round works for a low handicapper and a social player. Fairways and greens are Sea Isle paspalum, which holds its colour and pace through the northern winter.
Water comes into play on a good half of the holes and the mountain is the backdrop to most of them. Tam Dao is the longest drive of the four, around 65 kilometres each way, so we ask for a mid-morning tee time and you never leave before breakfast opens. Lunch at the clubhouse is at your own expense; back in Hanoi in the afternoon, your driver and guide take you to a local restaurant of your choice for dinner, at your own expense. Overnight in Hanoi.
After breakfast, an hour west of the city to Dong Mo reservoir below Ba Vi mountain. Kings Island opened in 1993 and was the first 18-hole course in northern Vietnam; the resort has since grown to three courses. You play the original Lakeside Course by Robert McFarland, par 72 and a little over 6,500 yards, reached the way it always has been: by the club's own boat across the lake.
Lakeside is not long, and that is the point. The Bermuda fairways are tight, the TifDwarf greens are small and water borders more holes than not, so it rewards placement over power. The boat adds fifteen to twenty minutes at each end, and we allow for it when we book your tee time. If Lakeside is closed for a tournament or maintenance on your date, the Mountainview Course at the same resort is used at the same green fee. Back to Hanoi in the afternoon, with the vehicle at your disposal for dinner in town at your own expense. Overnight in Hanoi.
Breakfast, then about an hour north to Dai Lai lake, at the foot of Ngoc Thanh mountain on the southern edge of the Tam Dao range. Dai Lai Star opened in November 2010, designed and built by Peter Waddell with Linkshape Australia, and is routed through pine forest between the lake and the hills. It is the most sheltered of the four courses and the one where the bunkering does most of the defending.
Lunch at the clubhouse is at your own expense. You are back in Hanoi by mid-afternoon, which makes this the best evening of the week for the Old Quarter; your driver and guide take you to dinner at a local restaurant, at your own expense. Overnight in Hanoi.
After breakfast, about an hour south-west into the limestone country of Luong Son, the same karst landscape that gives Ninh Binh the name Ha Long Bay on land. Phoenix opened in 2006 and, with 54 holes, is the largest golf facility in Vietnam: three 18-hole courses named Phoenix, Dragon and Champion, designed by Ronald Fream of Golfplan and routed through and around the limestone outcrops. Your round is on the Phoenix Course, on Bermuda fairways and greens.
An honest note: the setting and the golf are the reason to come, and both are excellent, but the clubhouse's upkeep and service are not at the level of the other three clubs. We suggest a light lunch there and saving the proper meal for Hanoi. The Dragon or Champion Course can be booked instead at a supplement. Yes. The vehicle, driver and English-speaking guide are for your group only, and the vehicle is sized for your golf bags as well as your seats: a 7-seater up to 3 golfers, a 16-seater for 4 to 7, a 29-seat coach for 8 to 24 and a 45-seat coach above that.
Daily breakfast at the hotel is included. Lunch on golf days is at the clubhouse after the round and dinner is in Hanoi, both at your own expense, so nobody is tied to a set menu or a set hour after 18 holes. Your guide suggests and reserves restaurants, and the vehicle takes you there and back. A full-board version with lunches and dinners included can be quoted on request.
The prices are for weekday rounds, Monday to Friday. Clubs add surcharges at weekends and on public holidays, which we confirm as soon as your dates are fixed. Tee times are requested once you confirm, and the four rounds may be played in a different order if a club is closed for a tournament or maintenance; the courses and the price do not change.
Green fee, caddy fee and a buggy shared by two players are included on all four rounds. Club rental, balls, golf shoes and the caddy tip (customary 300,000 to 500,000 VND per caddy per round) are not. All four clubs enforce a dress code: collared shirt, no denim, soft spikes.
Yes. A companion who does not play pays the same package less the four rounds, quoted on request, and is free in Hanoi on the golf days; a guided half-day or full-day Hanoi programme can be added. Children under 3 travel free. Children aged 3 to 10 pay 68% of the adult fare sharing their parents' bed or 86% with an extra bed. For a junior who plays, we quote individually; most clubs around Hanoi ask for a handicap certificate or club membership for players under 16.
Citizens of the UK, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the Nordic countries, Japan, South Korea and a number of other European countries can enter Vietnam visa-free for up to 45 days. Most ASEAN citizens get 14 to 30 days. Everyone else, including US, Canadian, Australian and Indian passport holders, applies online for an e-visa (up to 90 days, single or multiple entry) at the official portal evisa.gov.vn, usually issued in about 3 working days. Send an inquiry and we confirm the price in writing within 24 hours. Nothing is charged on this website. To confirm your tour, pay a 30% deposit by bank transfer or by Visa, Mastercard or Amex through a secure OnePay payment link that we email to you. The remaining 70% is due at least 14 days before you arrive. The deposit is non-refundable. If you cancel (in writing) more than 21 days before departure, you lose only the deposit, and any amount paid above it stays valid for 12 months towards another tour. From 7 to 21 days before departure the charge is 50% of the tour price, and within 6 days or for a no-show it is 100%. Groups of more than 8 people, and tours that include flights or Mekong river cruises, have different terms.
