Is the Fansipan cable car open now?

Yes. As of 7 October 2026, the Fansipan cable car is open. It reopened on Monday, 28 September 2026, after a seven-day maintenance closure. Sun World Fansipan Legend, a Sun Group company, runs the cable car and the funicular trains that link Sa Pa town to the 3,143 m summit.

Why was the Fansipan cable car closed in September 2026?

The closure was for scheduled routine maintenance. Sun Group reported that about 30 engineers, including international specialists, inspected the cables, connections and technical parts of the system. Much of the work took place above 3,000 m, where temperatures were around 10–15°C (CafeBiz, 27 September 2026).

Which Fansipan systems were affected?

The whole Sun World Fansipan Legend complex closed to visitors from 21 to 27 September 2026. All three transport systems are now back in service:

System Route Note
Muong Hoa funicular train Sa Pa town centre → Hoang Lien cable car base station Lower funicular
Fansipan cable car Hoang Lien base station → Fansipan mountain station Three-rope cable car, 6,292.5 m long, about 15 minutes each way
Fansipan summit funicular Mountain station → summit pagoda and Buddha statue area Replaces most of the stone steps to the summit

The Fansipan cable car holds two Guinness World Records: the longest non-stop three-rope cable car at the time it was certified, and the largest elevation difference between the departure and arrival stations, at 1,410 m.

Can I book a Fansipan day in October and November 2026?

Yes. There is no closure announced for October or November 2026. Autumn is a good time for Fansipan. The rains are usually over, the skies are clearer, and the views from the summit are more reliable than in summer. The rice terraces in the Muong Hoa Valley are harvested by October, so expect brown and gold fields, not green ones.

How do I plan a Fansipan day so the weather does not stop me?

Put Fansipan on your second full day in Sa Pa, not your arrival day. The summit is at 3,143 m, and cloud can sit on it for hours. A spare day lets us move Fansipan if the morning is fully clouded. An early start also helps: queues at the base station are shorter before mid-morning, and the summit is often clearer early in the day.

Will the Fansipan cable car close again for maintenance?

Sun World Fansipan Legend closes the system for planned maintenance from time to time, and announces the dates in advance. We will publish any new closure on this site and contact guests and travel agents with confirmed Sapa bookings within one business day.

How much is the Fansipan cable car ticket in 2026?

A return ticket on the Fansipan cable car costs 850,000 VND for adults and 550,000 VND for children 1.0–1.4 m tall. Children under 1.0 m ride free. The full journey from Sa Pa town to the summit and back, with both funicular trains, costs 1,370,000 VND per adult. These are Sun World Fansipan Legend's published 2026 prices, valid 1 January to 31 December 2026, VAT included.

Ticket (2026 public price, VND) Adult (over 1.4 m) Child (1.0–1.4 m) Under 1.0 m
Fansipan cable car, return 850,000 550,000 Free
Muong Hoa funicular train, return 200,000 200,000 Free
Summit funicular, up 170,000 170,000 Free
Summit funicular, down 150,000 150,000 Free
Full journey: cable car + both funiculars, return 1,370,000 1,070,000 Free
Lunch buffet at the cable car station 330,000 250,000 Free

Height, not age, decides the ticket type. The two funicular trains have one price for everyone 1.0 m and taller. Many visitors walk between Sa Pa town and the cable car base station instead of taking the Muong Hoa train, and some climb the stone steps to the summit instead of taking the summit funicular, which lowers the cost.

Prices change, and we quote the current Sun World price in every Sapa itinerary. Ticket agents sometimes sell below these public prices.

Where is Sa Pa and why do travellers go there?

Sa Pa is a mountain town in Lao Cai Province, in the far north-west of Vietnam, close to the China border. It sits in the Hoang Lien Son range, the highest mountains in Vietnam, with Fansipan rising directly above it. Travellers come for three things: the summit of Fansipan, the rice terraces of the Muong Hoa Valley, and the villages of the H'mong, Dao, Giay and Tay people who farm them.

The French built Sa Pa as a hill station in the early 20th century, to escape the summer heat of the Red River delta. Today it is the main trekking base in northern Vietnam. Since July 2025, when Vietnam merged its provinces from 63 to 34, Lao Cai Province also includes the former Yen Bai Province, so you may see Mu Cang Chai listed under Lao Cai as well.

How do you get from Hanoi to Sa Pa?

There are three standard ways to travel from Hanoi to Sa Pa. Most of our guests go by private car, because it is door to door and allows photo stops.

Option Route Good to know
Private car or van Hanoi → Noi Bai–Lao Cai Expressway → Sa Pa Most flexible; door to door
Sleeper or limousine bus Hanoi Old Quarter / My Dinh → Sa Pa Lowest cost; fixed departure times
Night train + transfer Hanoi Station → Lao Cai Station overnight, then road to Sa Pa Arrive early morning; trains run to Lao Cai, not to Sa Pa itself

What are the best things to do in Sa Pa besides Fansipan?

A typical Sapa trip mixes one Fansipan day with village treks and a mountain-pass drive. These are the places we include most often:

Place What it is Time needed
Muong Hoa Valley: Lao Chai and Ta Van The classic valley trek through Black H'mong and Giay villages, rice terraces and suspension bridges Half day to full day
Muong Hoa ancient carved rocks Boulders with prehistoric carvings beside the valley road, a national heritage site 30 minutes, on the way to Lao Chai
Cat Cat Village Black H'mong village below Sa Pa town, with a waterfall and craft houses 2–3 hours on foot from town
Ta Phin Village Red Dao village, known for embroidery and herbal leaf baths Half day
O Quy Ho Pass and Rong May Glass Bridge The high mountain pass on the road from Sa Pa towards Lai Chau, with a glass skywalk Half day; best in late afternoon
Silver Waterfall (Thac Bac) Roadside waterfall on the O Quy Ho road 30 minutes
Ham Rong Mountain Park and viewpoint directly above Sa Pa town 1–2 hours
Sa Pa Stone Church The stone Catholic church on the main square, built in the French period 15 minutes
Bac Ha Sunday Market Weekly highland market of the Flower H'mong people, north-east of Sa Pa Full day trip; Sundays only

Who lives in the villages around Sa Pa?

The valleys around Sa Pa are home to several ethnic minority groups, and you can often tell them apart by their clothes. The Black H'mong wear indigo-dyed hemp and are the largest group in Lao Chai and Cat Cat. The Red Dao wear red headscarves and live mainly in Ta Phin and Ta Van. The Giay and Tay live lower in the valley, in Ta Van and nearby villages. Many families also run homestays, so you can sleep in a village instead of in town.

On our treks, the local guide is often from one of these villages. Please ask before you take photos of people, and buy handicrafts directly from the makers when you can.

When is the best time to visit Sa Pa?

Sa Pa is open all year, but the landscape changes a lot by season. For rice terraces, come in September. For clear views from Fansipan, come in October to December or in spring.

Months Weather What you see
March–April Mild, mostly dry Blossoms; farmers start preparing terraces
May–June Warmer; rain begins Water-filled terraces reflecting the sky
July–August Rainy season Green terraces; trails muddy, some landslide risk
September Warm days, cooler nights Golden rice terraces before and during harvest
October–November Dry, clear, cool Best Fansipan views; terraces harvested
December–February Cold; frost and snow possible on Fansipan Winter scenery; warm clothes needed at the summit

How many days do you need in Sa Pa?

Plan two nights for Sa Pa at minimum, and three if you want a full trek day. One full day goes to Fansipan, one to the Muong Hoa Valley trek, and the travel days give you time for Cat Cat, Ham Rong or O Quy Ho Pass. A spare day also protects your Fansipan visit if cloud covers the summit.

Stay What fits
2 days / 1 night Fansipan + Cat Cat; rushed
3 days / 2 nights Fansipan + Lao Chai–Ta Van trek + Cat Cat
4 days / 3 nights Add Ta Phin, O Quy Ho Pass, or a village homestay night
5 days / 4 nights Add Bac Ha Sunday Market
