Located at the convergence of Vietnam, Laos, and China, A Pa Chai in Sin Thau Commune, Muong Nhe District, Dien Bien Province, is famously known as the westernmost point of Vietnam’s mainland. Nestled atop Khoang La San mountain at 1,864 meters above sea level, A Pa Chai is a culturally rich area home to several ethnic groups, especially the Ha Nhi people.
A Pa Chai lies roughly 680 km from Hanoi and about 260 km northwest of Dien Bien Phu City. It sits at the heart of a stunning mountainous region near the border junction known as Milestone No. 0.
This location is often referred to as “the place where a rooster crows and all three countries hear it.” The iconic granite Milestone No. 0 was established in 2005 and finalized in 2007 with the construction of Border Guard Station 317. The marker is inscribed in the languages and symbols of each nation, forming a tangible symbol of Indochina unity.
The dry season (October to April) is ideal, with wild sunflowers blooming in November and festivals in full swing. The early year (January–February) features lush green landscapes, while September highlights golden rice fields.
Travelers can reach A Pa Chai via Dien Bien Phu City:
Bring your ID card or passport and register at Station 317. Foreigners need permits from provincial police. All visitors must comply with local border regulations and register temporary stays if required.
Sample Northwest specialties like Pa Pich Top grilled fish, smoked buffalo meat, wild bamboo shoots, and black chicken — all featuring rich, local flavors.
The route begins at Station 317 with a motorbike ride to the foot of Khoang La San, followed by a 3km trek through forest trails. Elevation rises from 1,000m to 1,800m, with the final stretch being the steepest.
