Also known as Phu Quoc Coconut Tree Prison, this site is situated at 350 Nguyen Van Cu Street, An Thoi Ward, Duong Dong Town, Phu Quoc Island. Established during the Indochina War, it housed up to 32,000 prisoners. In 1995, it was officially recognized as a Special National Relic.

Historical Background

Under French Colonial Rule

Constructed in 1946, the prison initially spanned 40 hectares and was divided into four sections (A, B, C, and D). At its peak in 1954, it held 14,000 prisoners, many of whom suffered inhumane treatment. The site was transferred to the Vietnamese government after the Geneva Agreements.

During the Vietnam War

In 1955, a new prison area was built, increasing the facility’s capacity. Here, prisoners endured horrific torture methods, including tiger cages, electrical shocks, and nail hammering. Thousands perished or were permanently injured.

The prison spans 400 hectares, with nearly 500 buildings organized into 12 main zones and 10 smaller sections. Visitors can witness reconstructed torture methods, including confinement in tiger cages and severe beatings.

Despite the suffering endured, many prisoners attempted daring escapes, using makeshift tools to dig tunnels. The exhibits stand as a reminder of their resilience and bravery.
